'Our preparation was good with all players arriving on time and focused. Was also good to see attendance & support from players not playing.
The warm up ran smoothly however it was dissapointing we picked up an injury to one of our starting 11.
We approached the game with the focus of defending from the front with intense pressurising in midfield in order to force errors from our opponents in their own half also I was looking for an improvement in challenging for balls in the air. Our attacking strategy was to try to attack from the flanks and supply our forwards with plenty of balls in the box.
We were very evenly matched for the first 20 mins and the goal gave us a great boost. I'm very pleased for Ben to get on the score sheet due to our recent goal drought. Braunstone reacted well to going 1 down and put us under massive pressure from then on. I felt we needed another goal to help settle thingsdown however for the rest of the half our opportunities were far and few between trying to catch Braunstone on the counter attack.
The second half started very much how the first half ended, we were under pressure through out the half. The penalty was a result of the pressure from Braunstone forcing errors from us in our own half enabling their striker to get into a one on one situation against our keeper, their striker went down under the challenge for the ball who would have most likely have scored. The Dave should be very encouraged from his initial save & we were unlucky not to get onto the rebound. Their second goal again came from errors being forced in our own half causing us to concede a free kick out side the box.
Through out the second half our players were becoming increasingly fatigued due to injuries being picked up in all areas of our out field team. The last 2 substitues were used for the final 15/20 mins of the game but could have done with another 4 or 5!
I couldn't ask for anymore effort from our players, I'm very pleased with how we improved in winning balls in the air and kept a positive attitude through out the game. Through sheer determination and being prepared to get bodies in the way the players kept the deficit within reach so we were never out of the game, in fact I thought we came exceptionally close to equalising in injury time from an excellent corner headed just wide by Rigel.
If we can apply ourselves with the same focus and determination throughout the season I feel confident we can make an impact in this league.
Well Done & thanks to you all.
